Description:

Black Bean Burgers are a healthier alternative to meat burgers. These burgers are packed with proteins and are completely vegetarian. Here’s the best part – they’re just as delicious as meat burgers!

Ingredients:

1 can black beans, rinsed, drained
1/3 cup chopped red onion
1/4 cup dry breadcumbs
2 tablespoons +1/2 cup bottled chunky salsa
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon Tabasco
Vegetable oil
2 whole wheat hamburger buns

Directions:

In a bowl, mash the beans well. Add in onion, breadcrumbs, 2 tablespoons salsa, cumin and hot pepper sauce and mix. Season with salt and pepper. Moisten your palms and shape the bean mixture into two patties.
Preheat the barbecue to a medium-high heat. Brush the barbecue rack with oil. Grill the burger patties until heated through, about 3 minutes per side. Grill the cut sides of the buns until lightly toasted.
Place the burgers on the bottom halves of the buns. Spoon 1/4 cup salsa over each burger and cover with the tops of the buns.
Serve with bowls of sour cream and shredded lettuce.

Tips:

For a slightly different texture and taste, try adding a cupful of cooked basmati rice to the bean mixture.
